Technical Assistance Program

From vision to viable space

Artists and cultural organizations don’t just need space. They need the strategy, capital readiness, and support systems to secure it and sustain it. The Arts & Business Council’s Technical Assistance Program helps organizations move from idea to implementation through a flexible, deeply personalized approach. Whether you are early in your thinking or actively pursuing a site, we meet you where you’re at.

How It Works

Every organization enters with a different starting point. Some have a clear vision but limited resources. Others have momentum but need structure, strategy, or alignment.

Our process begins with a shared foundation:

Listen

We start by understanding your mission, goals, and definition of success

Assess

We identify gaps across space planning, capital readiness, communications, and internal capacity

Clarify

We break down your vision into realistic short-, mid-, and long-term priorities

Support

We align you with the right mix of technical assistance, resources, and partners

Pathways of support

From this shared starting point, participants move into different pathways depending on their goals, capacity, and stage of development. These pathways reflect the reality that organizations grow in different ways and at different speeds. The program is designed to adapt accordingly.

For organizations that already have or are close to securing space

  • Construction planning and project alignment
  • Capital campaign strategy
  • Support through acquisition and development processes

For organizations ready to translate ideas into actionable plans

  • Spatial planning and phased growth scenarios
  • Budgeting and cost modeling
  • Communications and fundraising readiness

For organizations seeking targeted or early-stage guidance

  • Strategic advising and referrals
  • Connections to partners and resources
  • Alignment within the broader cultural ecosystem

For ambitious initiatives that require expanded support

  • Financing strategy and capital pathways
  • Partnership development
  • Board and organizational readiness

What we’re building: Space readiness and capital readiness

The result is not just a project, but a stronger, more sustainable organization.

This work goes beyond space planning.
We help organizations build the capacity to support that space over time, including:

  • Fundraising strategy and capital campaign development
  • Financial planning and phased investment thinking
  • Clear, compelling communications for partners and funders
  • Internal alignment across staff, board, and collaborators

What readiness looks like

We think about readiness as a continuum, not a checkpoint. Each step forward builds toward long-term success.

As organizations move through the program, we see clear indicators of growth:

  • A defined vision for space aligned with mission
  • Stronger storytelling and capital campaign language
  • Realistic understanding of costs and timelines
  • Improved coordination across teams and partners
  • Readiness to engage funders, developers, and stakeholders

Beyond the cohort

In addition to direct participants, the program supports a broader network of artists, organizations, and partners through consulting, referrals, and shared learning opportunities.

This ecosystem approach strengthens the field as a whole, creating more pathways to space, capital, and long-term sustainability.

Why it matters

Access to space remains one of the biggest barriers to growth for cultural organizations. At the same time, the path to securing and sustaining that space has become more complex.

Our Technical Assistance Program helps organizations navigate that complexity with structure, strategy, and support.

Because thriving cultural spaces don’t happen by accident. They are built with intention.

Thank you to the Boston Foundation for your generous support of this work
